ELKO, Nev. (AP) - A longtime fixture in Elko County politics says he's ready to get back into the game.

Republican John Carpenter has announced he's running for a seat on the Elko County Commission where he served 14 years before serving 12-terms in the Nevada Assembly.

Carpenter is a frequent critic of federal land managers and their authority over ranching and mining in Elko County. He's especially concerned about the impact an Endangered Species Act listing of the sage grouse would have on rural Nevada.

Carpenter was elected to the legislature in 1986 and term-limited out in 2010. He's seeking the seat held by Charlie Myers, who will be forced out at year's end due to term limits.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports Myers is mulling a bid mayor.
