BOSTON (AP) - Martin Walsh has been sworn in as mayor of Boston, beginning a new political era in the city.

Walsh took the oath of office during an inaugural ceremony Monday at Boston College. He succeeds Thomas Menino, the longest-serving mayor in Boston history.

In remarks prepared for delivery, Walsh promised to listen, learn and lead. He outlined several broad goals for his administration, including creating jobs, ending what he calls "senseless gun violence" and improving the city's public schools.

Later Monday, the new mayor was scheduled to address the City Council and convene a closed public safety meeting.

An inauguration celebration featuring the Boston Pops, several bands and local comedians will be held Monday night.

Menino, who has battled health problems in recent years, retired after more than 20 years in office.
