WASHINGTON (AP) - Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg says a Republican Party that ignores the nation's Hispanics and balks at immigration overhaul does so at its political peril.
Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-independent, joined Michigan Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez on Friday to increase the pressure on Congress to act this year.
Bloomberg said a political party that ignores the fastest-growing voting bloc has no future. He said it's up to House Speaker John Boehner to deliver even though he faces opposition within the Republican caucus.
Boehner and the GOP leadership are working on a set of principles on immigration that they expect to present to the caucus next week at its annual retreat. The document has given new hope to immigration proponents.
