CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - County commissioners in Washoe County would be given one-time authority to increase county sales and property taxes to help finance upkeep and repair of aging schools.
The Assembly voted 32-8 in favor of AB46 Tuesday, a day after it was amended.
The bill seeks to increase the county sales tax rate by one-quarter of 1 percent and property taxes by 5-cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
In its original form, legislators would have imposed the tax hikes, something that would have required an unlikely two-thirds vote in both the Assembly and Senate.
It was amended late Monday night as "enabling" legislation, authorizing the county commission to impose the taxes with a two-thirds vote.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
