Talking Urinal Cakes Help Prevent Drunk Driving

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The state of Michigan has a new way to remind folks not to drink and drive. They're taking their message to the "John."

Bathroom fresheners are serving to "refresh" men's memories about getting designated drivers.

Specially-made urinal cakes actually have speakers in them and say lines such as, "Do yourself and everyone else a favor, call a sober friend or a cab."

Lt. Chris McIntire says 80% of drunk driving crashes are caused by men and of those, 40% are caused by 21- to 34-year-olds.

Michigan Highway Patrol officials hope these unique urinal cakes help "flush" away those statistics.

So far, people who have seen and heard the talking urinal cakes seem amused. Bar owner Brad White says, "I laughed... because it's like a little target."

The money for the devices came from a federal grant given to Michigan's Office of Highway Safety and Planning. They purchased 200 of them for $10,000 with those federal funds.
