Record Minus 24 in Ely; Bitter Cold Grips Nevada

Weather forecasters warned northern Nevadans to brace for more bitter cold as the temperature dropped to a record minus 24 in Ely early Monday and wind chills were expected to drop to near 40 below as winds pick up Monday night into Tuesday.

Hand Washing And the Flu Virus

The flu epidemic isn't bad in Nevada. But the state health division says confirmed cases are up 57% from only two weeks ago. They say something as simple as washing your hands can be the single most important thing you can do to stop influenza from spreading. For the past two days a hearing involving a murder and two rival motorcycle gangs as been going on in Washoe District Court. Because of the nature of the case, security has been beefed upped. We've received calls from viewers concerning RAVEN in the area, and increase police presence on Court Street.

Advocates Protest Horse Slaughter

About 60 wild horse advocates protested in front of the state legislative building in Carson City on Friday. The advocates say they want to bring light to what they say is the state department of agriculture advocacy of horse slaughter. Specifically the slaughter of Virginia Range Horses. Their claims are based upon the minutes of an agriculture board meeting 2 years ago.

Nearly 12,000 Citations For Texting & Talking While Driving

Nevada Law Enforcement started issuing citations for talking or texting on your cell phone while driving one year ago. Since that time nearly 12,000 citations have been issued by Nevada's Highway Patrol. That includes 2nd and 3rd time offenders.

Very Few DUI Arrests During New Year's Eve

There were very few DUI arrests on New Year's Eve and into this morning. The Nevada Highway Patrol reports that out of 275 traffic stops only seven motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Most of the motorists that were pulled over were designated drivers.

Slick Roads May Worsen Wednesday Night

Drivers returning back to work after the holidays had to contend with snowy roads Wednesday morning after nearly 6 inches of snow hit the valley floor in some places. City of Reno road crews were out on the streets by three Tuesday afternoon and worked around the clock clearing crucial roads in our area. Crews have already been out Wednesday sanding roads in anticipation of what might happen Wednesday night should clear skies break through.
