Job Growth Despite Record Unemployment

Updated: 09/19/2009 - At 13.2% the unemployment rate in Nevada is nearly twice what it was this time last year. Although the numbers are up, some say it may not be a direct reflection the number of people looking for work. “I think there are also some people who have been unemployed for some time who have depleted existing resources like savings and 401k and that kind of stuff, who are now filing,” says Emily Ellison of Hire Dynamics in Reno.

8 Horses Removed from Damonte Ranch Area

Posted: 08/21/2009 - As the hot, dry summer lingers, rangeland in the hills above East Reno is drying up. Now, wild horses are heading down into the Truckee meadows in search of food and water. That’s causing trouble for some residents in the Damonte Ranch area. 8 horses were trapped near Steamboat Parkway and removed by the State earlier this week. They are now being held in Carson City.

Store Owner Arrested in Sting Operation

Updated: 08/07/2009 - The owner of a downtown Reno liquor store was arrested after police say he tried to purchase $16,000 worth of stolen cigarettes. Malkit Singh was arrested at “Sam and Son Market” at 895 South Virginia Street just after 8:00 PM Thursday night. Sgt. Joe Burfield of the Reno Police Department says the sale was part of a sting operation that was put in place after police got an anonymous tip that Singh was purchasing stolen goods to stock his shelves.

Fighting Fires in Extreme Heat

Posted: 07/18/2009 - Crews battling the Red Rock and Trailer Fires also had to combat 100 degree heat Friday. While most people would be seeking shade and donning shorts, these men and women dress in full fire gear. The basic equipment includes heavy boots, t-shirts covered by long-sleeved fire resistant shirts, and heavy flame resistant pants. They wear helmets, goggles, gloves, and a harness to carry their fire shelter water and tools.
