ELKO, NV - A Winnemucca man was killed in a crash Saturday morning about 34 miles west of Elko on Interstate 80.

The Nevada Highway Patrol says shortly before 7AM, a 2001 black Ford F250 driven by 39-year-old Cesar Octavio Zamayoa of Winnemucca was traveling east in the right travel lane. Aristeo Aguilar-Perez, age 50, also from Winnemucca, was another occupant in the Ford F250, sitting in the right front passenger seat.

Zamayoa’s vehicle came upon a slower moving 2005 blue Peterbilt truck, pulling a set of double trailers, driven by 54-year-old Diana Kemper of Carlin. Troopers say Zamayoa did not react to the slower vehicle in front of him until it was too late, attempting to steer his Ford pickup to the left to avoid collision, but the left side of the pickup struck the rear of the slower truck’s trailer. Passenger Aguilar-Perez was ejected from the Ford and was killed. He was found not to have been wearing his seatbelt.

Zamayoa received non-life-threating injuries and was transported to the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in Elko. Kemper did not receive any injuries and her vehicle’s rear trailer received moderate damage.

Alcohol impairment may have been a contributing factor to this crash and the crash is still under investigation.
