Veterans Job Fair Held in Reno

Nevada no longer leads the nation in overall unemployment. The rate dropping to 9.7% in January. But for post 9-11 Veterans in our state, that rate is a staggering 18.9%. With that in mind Reno Town Mall hosted a job fair specifically catering to Veterans.

A steady stream of veterans flowed into Reno Town Mall Thursday for a Job Fair specifically designed for them.

Asked to bring copies of their resumes and be prepared for interviews on site, these potential employees say they are ready and able to start work now.

Some have been unemployed for months and even years.

“I'm currently employed its been in the last 5 months,” said Jamie Hurjdo a Veteran.

“Been unemployed for a year. My family is having a hard time They really need me to get back to work. I'm doing anything I can to get back to work,” Maryanne Berdan, a military spouse.

The 42 employers didn't not balk when asked to participate in Thursday's job fair.

They say they realize veterans bring a lot to the table in terms of varied skills, working with others, and discipline.

“We are basically here trying to put Nevadans back to work . We currently have about 100 openings. We are trying to employ these veterans,” says recruiter A.J Jackson.

Organizers say they hope to see at least 200 veterans before the day is through.

If they don't find a job here, the experience the Veteran receives talking to recruiters about themselves and what they can bring to a potential employer will no doubt help them the next time.

While Thursday's job fair was geared for the guard and reserve, all branches of the military, along with spouses were encouraged to attend the event.
