The Summit Kicks Off Holiday Season

RENO, NV -- It may be a little more than a month away, but Christmas came early at the The Summit Mall Saturday evening. It kicked off the holiday season with its eighth annual Lights Up tree lighting event.

The carolers, the decorated pine tree and even snow made it look a lot like Christmas at the Summit mall. It may still be November, but it didn't stop more than 2,500 people from bearing the frightful weather to get into the Christmas mood.

Special performances by Whitney Mayer and the Galena High School choir helped bring in the holiday cheer.

"We haven't quite put up our tree yet, it's a little too early for that, maybe after Thanksgiving, but it definitely puts me in the mood for Christmas," Brittney Young, a Reno resident said.

Families and friends sang and danced along to their favorite carols, while trying to stay warm. The Summit offered complimentary hot chocolate and cider to accommodate the dedicated folks who wanted to ring in the Christmas spirit early.

"It's just something that we do as a community service to really kick off the holiday season in Reno," Dan Davis, a representative from The Summit said.

And what's Christmas without the jolly big man in red? Santa and Mrs. Claus paid a special visit to his adoring fans, shaking their hands and paying close attention to the wishes of every good little girl and boy.

"Everyone's having fun, look at all the smiles!" A man from Reno said.

With love, laughter and a little bit of Santa's magic in the air, the night ended with a bang--a big fireworks show.
