Stolen Tombstone Returned to Historic Comstock
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A tombstone stolen decades ago from the gravesite of two young boys who froze to death in an 1871 blizzard on Nevada's historic Comstock is being returned to a small cemetery in Gold Hill.
A dedication this weekend will cap a tale of mystery that began when the grave marker was discovered missing sometime after 1974.
The broken marble headstone with the names of 14-year-old Henry Jones and his 9-year-old brother, John, was found near a mailbox in 1978 near Petaluma, Calif.
For decades it was kept in the cemetery of the Two Rock Valley Presbyterian Church. It was finally identified last fall and returned to Nevada.
The headstone has been repaired and will be erected at the Jones family plot during a ceremony Saturday.
