Spring Rainstorms: Good or Bad?

SPARKS, Nev. -- Just last week, it seemed like the warm weather was here to stay, but as you can see, we're back to raincoats and rain boots for the next couple of days.

You've heard the saying around town that if you wait 20 minutes, the weather will change, so are the constant weather changes in the Reno-Sparks area a blessing or a curse?

It seems relatively quiet outside--parks are empty and outdoor restaurants are vacant. It's a lot different from warm weather we've had the last couple of weeks, which has got people talking.

Some people say "it's ridiculous" or "it's bipolar.

"We were just camping last weekend and then we come out here and it's raining. It's freezing!" Kailie Joseph, a Sparks resident said.

Other people agree it can be sunshine one day and the snow the next.

"I keep getting in the mindset that 'oh boy it's going to be like this all the way through summer' and then it changes again. It fools me," a longtime Reno resident said.

Because we are in a drought, some people believe the storm came as a blessing.

"We always need more water so I'm always for more rain. The more rain we can get the better," a Reno resident said.

Some advise to just take it with a grain of salt--it's typical Reno weather. For home improvement stores like Ace Hardware, however, business slows down.

"When we have thunder and lightning it's not safe to fill up propane and that's a big chunk of our business," Lincoln Coppock, Ace Hardware store assistant manager said.

With April showers, comes May flowers and thanks to the avid gardeners in town, business picks back up quickly.

"Every year I stock up on tomatoes, zucchinis, bell peppers," said a Sparks resident.

"When the weather gets nice, people start buying more plants, buying patio furniture," Coppock said.

For the most part, it seems like the wet weather hasn't put much of a damper on many people's lives.

So whether it's sunny, raining, or snowing, people who have lived in the Reno-Sparks area for a while know that these rainstorms are normal for this time of year. However, it never hurts to be prepared for any weather condition all year round.
