Reno Police arrest two teens suspected of burglarizing a home in South Reno Thursday morning. They say one of the boys was armed with a loaded gun and a knife taken from the home. The arrests are the result of increased patrols in the area following a recent spike in similar crimes. Lt. Mohammad Rafaquat of the Reno Police Department says solving and preventing this type of crime is a constant battle for law enforcement. “Residential burglaries, vehicle burglaries are a huge problem region wide.” he says. “We shut down one group of people responsible and another pops up, so it’s an ongoing battle trying to stay ahead.”
Rafaquat says the neighborhood was targeted by burglars early last year, which raised concern that the same crooks may have returned to the neighborhood. In this case increased patrols helped crack the case, but police say residents are always the first line of defense. They remind residents to lock homes and cars and secure valuables. Working with neighbors to watch for suspicious activity will also reduce your chances of becoming a victim.
Police are still investigating this incident and whether the teens may be connected to similar crimes in the area. Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Reno Police Department or Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900.
