Scene of officer-involved shooting on Scorpio Circle

RENO, NV - Reno police are investigating a shooting Friday morning that led to the death of a burglary suspect.

Police say shortly after 4:30AM, Washoe County sheriff's deputies responded to reports of an intruder trying to get into a home on Scorpio Circle, near Geiger Grade in south Reno. When deputies got there, they found a man matching the description given by the witness.

Through a set of circumstances not being released yet, at least one deputy fired and the suspect was killed. Wednesday, police identified him as 40-year-old Layne Michael Campbell of Reno.

Both deputies are on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Since Washoe County deputies were involved, the Reno Police Department is the lead agency, working with Sparks police.

When the preliminary investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for an initial determination as to whether the shooting was justified under Nevada Law. If the shooting initially appears justified, the deputies can be returned to duty, pending a final determination as to justification by the District Attorney's Office.
