UPDATE:

The Sierra County Sheriff's Office is identifying the pilot of the plane as 67-year-old Robert "Bob" J. Richardson of Reno and Los Gatos, CA.

He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving at the rank of Captain during the Vietnam era.

Richardson was headed to Reno last Thursday, May 16th, to attend an advisory board for the College of Engineering of the University of Nevada, Reno where he was a board member.

The crash is still under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

TRUCKEE, CA - The pilot of a small plane that crashed Thursday in Sierra County, California was killed, and was the only person on board. That's according to a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash in the area of Verdi Peak near Boca Reservoir, northeast of Truckee.

FAA spokesman Ian McGregor says the twin-engine Cessna 421 headed to Reno went off radar at 1:25 p.m. about ten miles west of Verdi and crashed about five minutes later. Witnesses say they saw a fireball in the sky before the plane went down. The plane was coming from Santa Clara, California

McGregor says the plane was registered to a company called Tri-Wings LLC based in Reno, but the name of the pilot hasn't been released.

The cause of the crash hasn't been determined.
