WINNEMUCCA, NV -- One person is dead after a massive pileup on I-80 near Winnemucca Monday afternoon. NHP now says 27 vehicles were involved, some crashing eastbound and some west.
Trooper Jim Stewart with the Nevada Highway Patrol tells us I-80 is fully back open. For almost 24 hours, 80 was completely blocked near mile marker 176 in the Winnemucca city limits because of the pileup. Traffic was diverted through town.
Stewart says the accident was caused in part from a powerful sandstorm that blew through the Winnemucca area around 4:45PM Monday. The storm left drivers unable to see on the interstate.
51-year-old Ravi Dyer of Chicago was killed in the crash. 33 people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Humboldt General Hospital, according to the NHP. Three were flown to Renown in Reno for serious injuries.
