RENO -- The mayor of Reno is speaking out in support of the right of same-sex couples to wed. Mayor Bob Cashell appeared at an event launching Freedom Nevada, a campaign seeking to overturn the state's ban on allowing same-sex couples to marry. Cashell said the issue is not only one of rights, but is important to the city.
"Some companies don't move here because we don't have the equality and I think this is a step in the right direction," Cashell said.
Currently the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals is considering whether the state's definition of marriage as between a man and woman is constitutional.
Additionally, Nevada voters could consider whether to remove the ban in 2016. Voters previously voted to ban same-sex couples from marrying.
Freedom Nevada is described as a grassroots campaign founded by PLAN, the ACLU, the Human Rights Campaign and Freedom to Marry.
