CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller have re-introduced a Lyon County land bill that will allow the city of Yerington to develop land near a copper mine while setting aside a wilderness area.
The bill first introduced in the House of Representatives last year is designed to allow Yerington to buy from the federal government about 19 square miles surrounding Pumpkin Hollow, a copper mine being developed by Nevada Copper.
The proposed Wovoka Wilderness encompasses about 75 square miles of land between Smith Valley and Bridgeport, Calif., that officials say is culturally significant to Native Americans.
Reid and Heller say the wilderness designation will still protect the existing rights and interests of ranchers and miners.
