WELLS, Nev. (AP) - Elko County sheriff's officials say a sick, whimpering puppy found in a gas station trash bin in Wells led to the discovery of a nearby RV packed with about 35 dogs.

Undersheriff Clair Morris says a Flying J employee called the sheriff's office after pulling the puppy out of the trash Friday.

A deputy located the owners - a couple whose RV had broken down. They said they thought the puppy was dead and decided to dispose of it by throwing it in the trash bin.

Inside the RV, deputies found a pungent mess of dog feces and flies as well as the 35 dogs.

Morris told the Elko Daily Free Press that the puppy was taken to a veterinarian and the couple allowed eight unhealthy adult dogs to be taken to the Elko Animal Shelter.

He says the puppy was diagnosed with the infectious disease parvovirus and was fortunate to be alive.

Morris says the owners were not arrested or cited as there's no way to know whether the puppy actually appeared dead when it was tossed in the garbage.
