RENO, NV - A Reno Police Service Canine, Xero, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.

According to an official with the Reno Police Department, Xero passed away at his handler's home in North Reno.

Xero was recently diagnosed with an inoperable medical condition, according to the official. Complications of his condition caused him to pass away.

Reno Police Officer Steven Mayfield was partners with Xero since June of 2007, according to the official. The two assisted in every unit of the Reno Police Department, including local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in Northern Nevada.

The official says Xero played a big role in locating large amounts of drugs, and in the arrests of those suspected of selling drugs. Xero also acted as a dual-purpose police service canine, involved in tracking criminals, locating evidence and protecting his fellow officers, says the official.

Xero was also a part of the Police Canine Demonstrations, spending many hours with local children.
