RENO, NV - Reno police have arrested two people in connection with the theft of an SUV with guns in it.

Police say they responded to the Cal Neva casino downtown the evening of July 4. They met with a woman who had parked her Ford Explorer in the Cal Neva parking garage, admittedly with the vehicle running, keys in the ignition and her dog inside. But she said she had locked it, since she had a spare key to open it. She noticed the SUV was missing about an hour and a half later.

The woman told police she had two firearms inside the vehicle, plus a safe that contained $8,000 in cash and $6,000 in jewelry, and other miscellaneous items. The victim’s dog was recovered safe inside the parking garage.

Police say based on people seeing the surveillance photos, they got a tip that led to the arrest July 8 of 28-year-old Michael McNeal and 24-year-old Holli Dai Winters, his girlfriend. Police say they found the stolen guns in the couple's hotel room; they also found the SUV.

McNeal is charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Grand Larceny and two counts of Ex-Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Winters is charged with Burglary, two counts of Larceny of a Firearm, and Possession of a Controlled substance.

Reno police ask that people remember to safely secure their weapons inside their vehicles or to leave them safely secured inside their homes. Gun owners also need to document the serial numbers of all their firearms to better assist police in identifying the legal owner when they are recovered.

Reno police also ask that drivers never leave their vehicles running while unattended.
