CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A Carson City judge will appoint a panel of special masters to oversee the redrawing of Nevada voting districts and complete the task left unresolved by the Nevada Legislature.
During a half-hour hearing Tuesday, District Judge James Russell
says he wants to limit the panel to three or four people who will
emphasize demographics over politics.
He suggested the voter registrars from Clark and Washoe counties, and Carson City.
Russell also gave lawyers for the Democratic and Republican parties until July 20 to submit issues that should be addressed in the process or resolved before the panel begins its work.
Two maps drawn and approved by the Democratic majority in the
2011 session were vetoed by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, who
called them illegal.
