Deputy Chief Brian Allen, named to the job of chief at the Sparks Police Department
SPARKS, NV - Sparks City Manager Shaun D. Carey has announced that Sparks Deputy Police Chief Brian Allen, a 22-year veteran of the Sparks Police Department, is his choice to become the city’s next Chief of Police. Deputy Chief Allen will replace retiring Chief Steve Keefer.
“I am extremely proud to appoint Deputy Chief Brian Allen as the City’s next Chief of Police, a longtime resident of our city,” said Sparks City Manager Shaun Carey. “Deputy Chief Allen is a seasoned and highly experienced law enforcement officer who has brought innovation to the city’s police department. We have all benefitted from his leadership, and I look forward to continuing to work with Brian and his dedicated team of professionals who work to keep our citizens safe every day,” said Carey.
City Manager Carey’s appointment of Deputy Chief Allen requires ratification by the Sparks City Council, which would be followed by a swearing-in ceremony upon confirmation, scheduled for the May 28th Sparks City Council Meeting.
Allen was born in Carmichael, CA and moved to Sparks in 1976 at age 6. He graduated from Edward C. Reed High School in 1988. In 1997, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal justice from University of Nevada, Reno.
Deputy Chief Brian Allen began his career with the Sparks Police Department in 1991 as a Police Officer. As an officer, Allen was a field training officer, a department instructor, and assigned to the SWAT Team. In 1999, Allen was promoted to Sergeant where he served as a Patrol Sergeant, Project Development Sergeant, and Support Services Section Sergeant. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2004 and served in the Patrol Division, and then promoted to Commander in 2008 for special assignments. Allen served as the Acting Deputy Chief from October of 2009 through July of 2011 when he was officially named the Deputy Chief of Police. On March 25, 2013, Allen was named and is currently the Acting Chief of Police for the Sparks Police Department.
Allen has extensive training in law enforcement subjects and has attended Executive Police Management trainings such as: The Senior Management Institute for Police by the Police Executive Research Forum in Boston, MA and the Chief Executive Leadership Course through the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, KY. Allen holds a Management Certificate from the State of Nevada, Peace Officers’ Standards and Training. He is also a member of the Police Executive Research Forum, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association.
