New Governor's Cup for NV-UNLV All-Sport Rivalry

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Gov. Brian Sandoval is adding a new twist to the Nevada-UNLV rivalry.

Sandoval told the Reno Gazette-Journal Thursday he's creating a trophy called "The Governor's Cup" to be awarded annually to the school with the best overall athletic performance.

The winner of Nevada-UNLV football game already gets the Fremont Cannon.

Sandoval says the Governor's Cup will be based on points tallied for all men's and women's sports.

The UNR grad says he'd like to see the Rebels and the Wolf Pack play each other the last week of the football season like many rivals do nationally. He's afraid playing that game on Nevada Day as some have suggested could hurt attendance because of the variety of events surrounding the Nevada Day parade in Carson City.
