New Boys & Girls Club Facility Set to Open by Summer

RENO, Nev. - Construction is underway at a new Boys & Girls club facility in Southwest Reno. The William N. Pennington facility is set to open by this summer.

"We're very excited about this new facility," Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows CPO Mike Wurm said. "The lower level is all for kids and we'll have a youth center, a teen center, a tween center, a gym and cafeteria. Upstairs will be a non-profit center so we'll be sharing space with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada and The Solace Tree."

The building on Foster Drive sits on the site of the old YMCA of the Sierra. The hope is to bring that type of programming back to the community.

"This property has a great history of youth programming," David Taylor of the Boys & Girls Club said. "When the YMCA shut down it left a void in the southwest community as far as youth programming goes. So we're going to offer those same types of things; sports, camps and before and after school programs."

Community members have the chance to buy decorative bricks that will be placed in the main entrance.

"People will have the opportunity to put their names, businesses or the names of loved ones on these bricks," Wurm said. "You can get one for as little as $100 on our website, www.bgctm.org/bricks and design and pay for it online."

He says the new facility fills a need in this community.

"When we did our demographic studies we found out there's 40 percent poverty in this area of kids that we consider our target groups," Wurm said. "The school a block from here is very close to becoming a title one school, which means there are more kids receiving free and reduced lunch than not, so we're definitely in the right neighborhood."

They expect to have the doors open by May or June, in time for their Summer program.
