RENO -- The City of Reno is recognizing two downtown motels for efforts to reduce criminal activity. Police Chief Steve Pitts presented special signage to the owner of the motels Wednesday.

"In general terms what we're looking for is to make downtown more approachable bring people who live downtown to events and help them feel comfortable and safe down here," Pitts said.

These motels are the first to receive this designation.

The In-Town Motel's manager, said more than a year ago "nighttime this place just came alive everybody was on drugs on meth and all the crime all the people and it was just us trying to fight against them very hard."

But after the motel's managers met with Code Enforcement and RPD, they learned how to correct the problems. They had a check list of things to do, but now the crime situation is very different. "Most of (the tenants) were here not even paying rent and the rest of them we did nuisance evictions and we didn't actually have to follow through with most evictions," a motel manager said.
