GERLACH, NV - The Pershing County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man hit and killed by a train Monday morning.
26-year-old Derek Sorenson, visiting Pershing County from northern California, died when the westbound Union Pacific train hit him right after midnight. This happened about 15 miles northeast of Gerlach.
Investigators say Sorenson was part of a group of people camping in the area, and they went to the railroad tracks to watch trains pass. They stood on a track itself as the train approached, and only Sorenson didn't get completely off.
Washoe County deputies responded first, since the area is closer to their response area than where Pershing deputies would have started their trip.
