GERLACH, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say a man is dead after being hit by a freight train overnight near northern Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

Union Pacific Railroad officials say the crash happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday some 15 miles northeast of Gerlach.

Washoe County sheriff's officials say they have been helping Pershing County officials investigate the scene. Authorities say a Careflight helicopter was also sent to the crash site.

Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt says the train was heading from Nebraska to California.
