A proposed registry by State Senator Mark Manendo would track animal abusers so that shelters and animal sellers check that pets don't end up in the wrong homes.
RENO, NV - The Nevada Humane Society, SPCA of Northern Nevada and Pet Network Humane Society all were part of the 5th Maddie's-Pet Adoption Days.
The event found homes for 557 local dogs and cats and gathered an estimated $439,500 for area animal shelters. The nationwide event takes place in nearly 600 cities across the country.
The event started when Dave Duffield and his wife Cheryl lost their Miniature Schnauzer in 2010. The annual event has found homes for more than 30,000 homeless dogs and cats since 2010.
For each pet adopted, Maddie’s Fund gives participating shelters from $500 to $2,000 to cover the true costs of those adoptions. This funding enables the shelters and rescue groups to save and treat more animals throughout the year.
Nationally, the pet adoptions in 2014 soared 78% over 2013 when there were 8.432 pets adopted.
