Holiday Injuries on the Rise

RENO, NV - It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but the holiday season also means you're more likely to accidentally injure yourself. According to the Consumer Product Commission, nearly 15,000 injuries involving holiday decorating were reported last year. The agency predicts even more injuries this year, but knowing what to look out for could be the key to keeping you safe.

The centerpiece of most Christmas decorations, the tree, needs extra care to reduce fire danger. "Make sure it's a tree that's green and the needles aren't already falling off," says Amy Ray, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Fire Marshal. "Before you put it in the Christmas tree stand, be sure to cut some off of the bottom so water can be absorbed when you water the tree." Ray also suggests checking your light strand for broken bulbs or cords. She says using a surge protector and the appropriate inside or outside extension cord will also keep you safe.

With a cold snap gripping our area slips and falls on the ice, or even from ladders while decorating could leave you laid up for the holiday. So REMSA reminds you to use caution. Read warning labels on ladders and get a buddy to help you if you can.

REMSA's Kurt Althof says the holiday also brings additional temptations for kids. "Believe it or not holly berries, mistletoe and poinsettias can cause stomach irritation," he says. "Ornaments or decorations that look like candy can be a choking hazard for children." Keeping those items out of reach can keep your Christmas merry and your family safe.

If your kids get into something or you are injured and not sure if you need medical attention you can call REMSA's "Nurse Health Hotline" 24 hours a day. The number is 858-1000.
