Hero Girl Recognized in Fernley

FERNLEY, NV - An unlikely hero was honored Friday in Fernley. A young girl jumped into action last month when her family needed her most. They had been involved in a rollover and she was the one to make sure her siblings made it out safe.

It happened on a stretch of Highway 50 in August. The Sweetser family was headed to NAS Fallon. They were struck on the driver's side, which triggered a rollover. They were left hanging upside down, and it was a seven-year-old who acted quickly, helping out her siblings.

Troopers from NHP made a special visit to East Valley Elementary Friday afternoon. Students heard a story about an accident that happened over a month ago. A little girl who was in the car wasn't scared, but heroic; she unbuckled her little sister and led her to safety.

Eight-year-old Rylee Sweetser had no clue Friday's ceremony was for her.

"I have seen accidents on the news and I know what to do now," said Rylee.

"She was only 7 and she reacted way better than most adults would so i was very proud of her," said Jamie Sweetser, Rylee's mom.

The ceremony came together after NHP officers heard of Riley's heroics.

"It's hard to believe to go through that traumatic of a rollover and be able to compose yourself and have enough wits about you to get your siblings out of a car," said Chris Kelley with the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Officers say most adults don't act the way Rylee did.

"I found it to be really miraculous and very heroic what she did that day, being that she is an 8-year-old," said Kelley.

"I of course told her that she was brave and she was my hero and all that stuff. But it does not really mean much coming from mom when you hear it all the time so they just put this all together," said Jaime Sweetser.

After the ceremony, Rylee said she liked the recognition.

"I think it was very fun," said Rylee.

As part of the recognition, Rylee was given a chief's coin from the NHP and that's very special; it's only given to troopers who have been on the job for more than 25 years.
