ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Federal mine safety regulators are investigating the death of a miner at an underground gold mine in northeast Nevada.
Newmont Mining Corp. spokeswoman Mary Korpi says 54-year-old Corey Vasquez was killed in the accident about 8:15 p.m. Sunday while operating a loader at Newmont's Exodus Underground Mine about 25 miles north of Carlin.
Korpi tells the Elko Daily Free Press Newmont is cooperating in the investigation with the Eureka County sheriff's office and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Vasquez was a mechanic with six years' experience. His death marks the second fatal accident at a Nevada mine this year and the second fatality at the Exodus Mine in less than a year. 49-year-old Allen Campbell of Spring Creek died in an accident there on Aug. 31.
