RENO, NV - Now that the weather has warmed up, farmers markets are sprouting up nearly every day of the week in Washoe County.
The late arrival of Spring meant a slow start for some vendors. Now they’re trying to make up time. Despite long hours, heavy lifting, and the summer heat, many working the markets say it’s the best summer job you can have.
“We have 6 different markets during the week,” says Jessie Ross of Yuba City. During the winter she’s a high school math teacher, but returns year after year to work at outdoor markets in Northern Nevada.
“I get here about 6:30 and I leave about 1:30 – 2:00,” she explains. Every time she arrives, she has to build her stand from scratch, putting up a tent and unloading boxes of fruit for display.
“After a few weeks I definitely get some arm muscles,” jokes Ross.
Farmers markets are a great way to enjoy the weather and shop for healthy produce and crafts.
It also helps the local economy, by drawing new business to different parts of town. For a list of farmers markets in our area check out the link below.
