Fallon Hosts Area's Largest Veterans Service Day in History

It was a special day for residents and veterans in Fallon Saturday.
The American Legion Post 16 and the American Legion Family held the areas largest Veterans Service Day in history.

"I just came to see what Fallon was putting on for the veterans and I came in this morning and found out more information about the VA process to help me out a little," says Philip Salbatino.

Salbatino retired earlier this year, after serving 20 years in the U.S. Army.

He and his wife came to the Veterans Service Day to learn more about their healthcare options.

"It is difficult getting out and you know there's not going to be a VA hospital in every town but you plan out your retirement close to the areas," says Salbatino.

Volunteers at the service day answered many veteran's questions about education, claims assistance, counseling and employment.

Ric Fairbanks with the State of Nevada Employment Services says it can be especially hard for veterans to find jobs.

"Many employers don't know what military people go through and the skills they can offer. Many of our guys are military oriented, therefore they don't know how to utilize the civilian terms to show they have the same job skills as many people on the street," says Fairbanks.

Fairbanks helps veterans write cover letters and resumes. He says for many young men and women, this is the first job they've ever applied for.

"We try and show them where to look for job opportunities," says Fairbanks.

The last Veterans Service Day in Fallon was two years ago. American Legion Auxillary President Karen Cline says many veterans came out that day as well to learn about services available to them.

"There are a lot of veterans out there that don't realize that they have benefits coming to them and they don't get the help they need," says Kline.

Volunteers and service officers dedicated their saturday to make sure veterans like Philip Salbatino have their questions answered.

Fallon residents and others were also invited to today's service day, so they could stop by and thank a veteran.
