RENO, Nev. (AP) - Humboldt County prosecutors are considering filing misdemeanor criminal charges against a former outdoor writer for the Reno Gazette-Journal accused of illegally shooting a deer at the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge.
The newspaper reported Friday Nevada Department of Wildlife officials forwarded the case to the district attorney after finding evidence Scott Oxarart illegally shot a deer from a vehicle and possessed a firearm inside a vehicle.
The first crime is punishable by a $650 and the other $250.
Oxarart wrote about his first deer hunt in a first-person account for the newspaper last month.
Executive editor Kelly Ann Scott says portions of his article conflicted with evidence NDOW cited in its investigation. She says Oxarart no longer works for RGJ but can't comment further because it's a personnel matter.
