Elko Commission Looking At Indian Colony Bill

County commissioners in Elko are looking again at a federal measure to nearly triple the size of a northeast Nevada Indian colony and to create a motocross recreation facility.

Commission action Wednesday could come on the Elko Motocross and
Tribal Conveyance Act.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the bill was introduced in 2008 by Democratic Sen. Harry Reid and Republican Sen. John Ensign, and might be reintroduced in Congress this year.

It proposes adding about 366 acres currently held in trust by the U.S. Department of the Interior to the Elko Band Colony near Elko.

The bill would also allow for transfer of about 240 acres of federal Bureau of Land Management land for a motocross, all-terrain vehicle and outdoor recreation facility near a shooting range west of Elko.
