ELKO, Nev. (AP) - The city of Elko wants to start changing some of its residents' addresses after finding that more than 1,000 homes were given the wrong numbers decades ago.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/WSQa2E) many of the address numbers are out of sequence or on the wrong side of the street. About 75 percent of the wrong numbers are inside mobile home parks.

Fire Chief Matt Griego says the mistakes have interfered with an expensive public safety mapping software that the city recently installed.

The program can pinpoint fire hydrants and pull up floor plans for commercial buildings, but is thrown off by the wrong numbers.

Mobile home park owners including John Carpenter protested the plan, saying residents would be upset and confused about changing addresses they've had for years.
