Elko Jail Expansion On The Horizon

ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko County commissioners are hoping to save time and money by tackling two phases of a jail expansion project at once.

Commissioners on Wednesday voted to put the $3.6 million project out for bid. It will include construction of additional dorm space for women and a new wing for men.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the county had considered completing the two phases separately, but decided it could save money if done together.

Sheriff Jim Pitts says given the increasing number of inmates, the jail expansion is overdue.

The inmate population was 14 above capacity this week.

Last year, the state issued a warning when the jail exceeded an 8-to-1 ratio of female inmates per toilet.

Earlier in the year, the Elko County Commission approved Sheriff Jim Pitts' proposal to charge inmates $6 a day for meals, $10 for each doctor visit and $5 for initial booking into the jail, a move he says will save county taxpayers millions of dollars a year.
