ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko County has raised nearly one-half million dollars by auctioning off more than 150 pieces of land where county property taxes were delinquent.
More than 100 bidders turned out at the treasurer's office this week to snatch up a piece of northeast Nevada real estate.
Treasurer Rebecca Erickson says they collected $450,000 - almost double what they've raised at past auctions.
Erickson said many of the bidders return to Elko every year to buy property.
Ashley Baxter of California attended with Jesse Marshall of Calgary, Canada, who's been coming for a decade. They bought 19 parcels in Montello along U.S. Highway 93 near Jackpot and in Sun Valley.
Baxter told the Elko Daily Free Press, "Many people go to the beach for a vacation, but we go to Elko."
