MINDEN, Nev. (AP) - A Douglas County man has pleaded guilty to shooting and killing a stray cat that was living under his porch.
The Record-Courier reports 54-year-old Rodney Shoop pleaded guilty Monday to torturing or injuring an animal. He faces up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine when sentenced in September by District Judge Michael Gibbons.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the state has agreed to recommend a suspended 36 month sentence with no active jail time. Prosecutors also dropped a charge of ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
Shoop told the judge the stray had hurt his own cat, resulting in veterinary bills. After shooting the cat in February, Shoop is accused of dismembering the animal and tossing its head over a neighbor's fence.
