Cherry Creek Water Bills Up 240 Percent
RENO, Nev. (AP) - The monthly water bill has more than tripled for residents of a small rural town north of Ely, but it could have been worse.
The Public Utilities Commission recently approved a 240 percent
increase, from $20 to $68 a month, for the few dozen people who live in Cherry Creek.
Cherry Creek Water Co. owner Ray Bick requested an even bigger
boost to $102 a month. He said he needed that much to cover rising
costs just to break even.
The Nevada Attorney General's Bureau of Consumer Protection
intervened on behalf of the residents and negotiated a compromise
with Bick, who has owned the company for 20 years.
The bureau concluded he inflated his operational costs and
recommended they be cut in half. The PUC approved the deal April 25.
