Carson Shooting Victims ID'd; Father Called A Hero

CARSON CITY - The day after a manhunt for the suspect in a Carson City murder ended in his suicide, his victim is credited with saving his daughter and son's lives.

Twenty-two-year-old Michael Brentlinger had remained at large since a Saturday morning shooting at the Carson City home of his former girlfriend.

But Monday, Reno police found him huddled under a tree in a park in southwest Reno. After a short conversation he turned the gun on himself.

Carson Sheriff Ken Furlong had withheld the names of his victims out of concern for their safety. With Brentlinger dead, he released their identity along with detail concerning Saturday's shooting and events that had led up to it.

Brentlinger had apparently dated 19-year-old Cassandra Perry and had lived in the home she shared with her brother, but sometime during the fall of 2013, the relationship soured.

He was asked to leave, but continued to return. On December 5th he was arrested on a trespassing charge. She got a Temporary Restraining Order to keep him away.

Saturday, he apparently returned, entering the home through a window, armed with a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun which detectives now say was stolen.

Alarmed, she called her father, who lived across the street.

Fifty-two-year-old Guy Perry came armed and found Brentlinger in a hallway outside his daughter and son's bedrooms. He was shot twice in the chest, dying at the scene.

Cassandra Perry was then shot in the back of the head. Miraculously, the bullet didn't penetrate her skull and she's expected to fully recover.

Awakened, her brother Kyle struggled with Brentlinger. More shots were fired. He was not hit and Brentlinger fled.

Today Sheriff Furlong says he has no doubt Guy Perry's actions saved his son and daughter's lives.
