CARSON CITY, NV - A bomb squad from NAS Fallon is checking a Civil War-era cannonball owned by a Carson City resident for 20 years.
Sheriff Ken Furlong says the man was displaying the cannonball at a garage sale when someone suggested checking it to make sure it's not dangerous. So he contacted the sheriff's office, which sent a bomb squad to check it out at his home at Saliman and Robinson, near Carson High School.
The CCSO bomb squad wasn't able to x-ray the ball because of its thickness and heaviness, so the Fallon squad is being sent in as a precaution. The Fallon team will take it back to Fallon to determine if it is safe to return it to the owner. But Furlong says if it is from the Civil War, it likely doesn't contain explosives; it's simply very heavy.
It is not considered a threat to the neighborhood as it is, according to bomb squad members.
