DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev.-- The BLM is trying out a pilot project to treat wild horses with birth control. Over the next two weeks, a shot will be injected into mares residing near the Fish Springs Community.
The mares will be monitored to determine whether this treatment will lower the population growth rate. If the project works, it may be expanded in other areas of the Pine Nut Mountains next year.
Last year the BLM sought alternative methods of controlling wild horse population rate rather than removing horses from the land.
