WINNEMUCCA, Nev. (AP) - Federal land managers are accepting public comments on their proposal to acquire 320 acres of private land bordering the East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness in northwest Nevada.
The wilderness is located entirely within the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area in Washoe County, about 130 miles north of Reno.
The Bureau of Land Management says the lands identified for acquisition are from willing sellers, and are being acquired for valuable resource qualities such as sage grouse habitat, wilderness and public access.
Officials say acquisitions of private lands within the NCA are in line with objectives of the area's resource management plan.
The BLM's Winnemucca district is accepting comments on its preliminary environmental assessment of the proposal until June 29.
The NCA commemorates thousands of covered-wagon pioneers who traversed the Applegate-Lassen Trail to reach California in the 19th century.
