Governor Asks Community Leaders for Budget Suggestions

Our state is trying to fill a nearly $1 billion shortfall. Meanwhile cities across Nevada are asking lawmakers to back off. The say they’ve done their share pointing out that last year's budget was balanced by money that was taken from them.

Monday, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and Mayor Bob Cashell sat down with the Governor Gibbons to ask him not to take money from their communities. Afterward, Governor Jim gibbons said he thought the meeting went well. He’s looking for to work together to save money during this budget crunch. One idea the Governor liked is the possibility of removing state mandates for operating hours of government offices.

Reducing hours could go a long way towards cutting costs, especially in rural communities. Local government representatives also wanted to discourage the Governor and the State from diverting millions from their budget to fix Nevada’s fiscal problems. The Governor says as far as he’s concerned taxes will not increase.
