RENO, NV - For decades, Charlie Brown has been asking, what is the true meaning of Christmas? "Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about!?" Now, Advent Conspiracy is encouraging people to find that meaning for themselves. The group's Youtube video has received more than one million hits. Their goal is to encourage people to spend less, but give more.
It's an idea Reno resident Linda Ribera can relate to. She says, "People are getting back to the basics- they're staying at home, doing the family thing."
As budgets shrink this holiday season, many realize its just as important to give back as it is to cut back. Linda tells KOLO 8 News Now that she's fortunate to have a job in this economy and she believes in giving back.
Americans spend 450 billion dollars during Christmas each year. Yet, those behind Advent Conspiracy say it would only take 10 billion dollars to provide clean water to the entire world. Pastor Ryan Ashley with Life Church Reno argues, "One of the biggest needs in the world is clean water, in fact one in seven people don't have access to clean water at all."
In Reno, the Life Church's Tree Well project with hopes to change that. Profits from each tree sold at their lot go toward building wells in Guatemala and Sierra Leone. "This is a global problem and we're thinking, what can we do here?," said Pastor Ashley. "We came up with a local solution." Although the project may seem small, the wells they hope to build will provide water for hundreds of people and for generations to come.
"What's $50 to me or you won't go unnoticed," says Pastor Ashley, "but that means a world of difference to someone on the other side of the globe." And from the wise words of Linus and the Peanut gang, "That's what christmas is all about Charlie Brown."
