CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada's unemployment continues to soar, to a record 13.2% in August statewide.
The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said Friday that the jobless rate was 13.4% in the Las Vegas area and 12.4% in the Reno-Sparks area. Those figures aren't seasonally adjusted.
Nationally, the unemployment rate stood at 9.7% in August.
Officials say Nevada's statewide unemployment rate a year ago was 7%.
Compare that with December 2007 -- before the recession. The state jobless rate then was 5.2%.
Officials say construction has been hit particularly hard, along with leisure and hospitality services.
The only sectors to add jobs in August were education and health care.
