The number of residential burglaries has jumped in sparks. At least 10 reports were filed last week for neighborhoods near downtown and in the northeast. Police aren't sure why the numbers have spiked, but they are encouraging residents to take action to reduce their odds of becoming a victim.
They suggest watching for suspicious activity around your home. Pay special attention to people who look out of place, or vehicle that don't seem to belong in the neighborhood. Sparks Police also encourage residents to look to their neighbors for help by starting a Neighborhood Watch Program.
At home, they suggest keeping bushes and shrubs trimmed away from entrances, walkways, and windows. Using security lights in the front and back of your home will also discourage crooks who don't want to be seen. If you have an alarm system be sure to activate it, and don't overlook the simple action of locking doors. That includes securing garages, pet doors and windows.
