Snow Means Cash for Local Business

RENO - All the snow this holiday weekend may have caused problems for travelers, but for local business owners it was virtually 'white gold'. Between selling snow chains and renting gear to hit the slopes, Curtis Brown of Mountain Top Sports can hardly keep up with the constant flow of customers. He says he’s having the best season ever.

Despite a seeing fewer tourists in town to ski in recent months, he says some changes brought about by the struggling economy have worked in his favor. As airlines increase fees for carryon luggage, more visiting skiers are opting to leave their own gear behind and visit Mountain Top Sports on the way to the slopes. And thanks to the series of storms that hit the Sierra over the weekend, more people than usual flocked to area ski resorts.

Business was also good for hotels in Reno. They say special Valentine’s Day value packages, and a number of local events helped draw more people to the down town area. While the snow did discourage some visitors from driving across mountain passes into Northern Nevada, many local hotels we spoke with say they were close to capacity for the dual holiday weekend.
